Robert (Bob) Sanders, Age :89

Robert (Bob) Sanders 89, died on February 5, 2019, at the Veterans Hospital in Prescott, Arizona. He was born June 29,1929, in Pacoima, California.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Zona Kay Sanders; a brother, Richard Sanders and his wife, Elizabeth; three sons: Frederick Sanders, Bart Sanders and his wife, Bernadette, Charles Crocker and his wife, Judith; 10 grandchildren: Aria Sanders, Sara Sanders Cordova, Michol Burch, Joshua Sanders, Omteme Sanders, Lidol Won Sanders, Courtney Montgomery, Alyssa Andersen, Joshua Crocker, Rebecca Crocker; and 14 great grandchildren.  Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 at age 17 and was stationed in Japan.  He worked in the motor pool and was selected as one of General Douglas MacArthur’s personal auto mechanics; which included being a member of MacArthur 's Honor Guard.  After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1950, he continued working in the automotive industry for more than 40 years.  During this time, he became a partner in the ownership of a large new car dealership in Hemet, CA.  After retiring from the automotive business, his ambitious endeavors didn’t stop; he purchased an old building in downtown Prescott, AZ and completely renovated it into a beautiful antique mall.  Later on, he owned and ran the Sanders Trading Post in Deming, NM.  His most cherished hobby was fishing in any body of water he could find.  He also enjoyed woodworking, cabinet making, and the restoration of antique furniture.  Bob was raised in the Baptist religion but later in life converted to Catholicism while living in Liebenthal, Kansas. While in Liebenthal, he helped the Catholic nuns with handy work at the St. Joseph Church; theses nuns were instrumental in his conversion to the Catholic religion.  He also became the mayor of that city.  He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Steven Meison Sanders and Chonita Prendez Compos; former wife, Eleanor Wassel Sanders; siblings, Rudolph Sanders, Isabel Ortega, Raymond Sanders; and son, Robert Michael Sanders.  On Thursday, February 14, the viewing will be held at 11:00 a.m. and recital of the Rosary will be at 11:30 a.m. at the Riverside Funeral Home of Santa Fe Chapel, 3232 Cerrillos Road.  This will be followed by a burial service at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. with full military honors as afforded by the United States Army Honor Guard.  Please visit our online guestbook for Robert at
