 Llewyn Eugene “Gene” Green

January 20, 1930 – July 24, 2020

Llewyn Eugene “Gene” Green of Tucumcari, New Mexico passed away peacefully on July 24, 2020 at Quail Ridge. He was 90 years old.

Gene is survived by his beloved wife Virginia, daughter Wyla Green, son Bruce Green of Rye, Colorado; daughter in law Kathleen Green and granddaughter Claire Green, both of Albuquerque, New Mexico.  He is preceded in death by his son Larry in 2014 and Bruce’s wife Sharon McGuin in 2017. Also surviving are his sister Ernie Lee Miller of La Luz, New Mexico, two nephews and many cousins.

Gene was born in Sayre, Oklahoma in 1930. His family traveled west and made a home in Alamogordo. Gene was a tough kid who rode broncs and loved the rodeo. He enlisted in the Navy where he was stationed in Hawaii and served honorably for four years. After his service, Gene attended college at Eastern New Mexico University and then New Mexico State University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture. Gene went on to work for the US Department of Agriculture as a Soil, Water and Resource Conservationist.

As a conservationist, Gene traveled the State working with local governments and many others to conserve the beautiful lands and resources of New Mexico. He was a talker, a joker and loved people. He enjoyed his career for 30 years, then retired to his own small farm outside of Tucumcari. He grazed a few cattle on his farm and was happiest when he was out working with animals or on the land. When inside, he loved to watch all types of sports.

Arrangements for his cremation are entrusted to the professionals of Riverside Funeral Home of Albuquerque, New Mexico. At the present time, no service is scheduled but a celebration of life is planned for the future.

In the summer months, Gene would remind everyone to watch for snakes and to watch the clouds to make sure you weren’t caught in a severe storm. He was always thankful for everything and wanted you to be safe.  We thank Linda Sims and the staff of Cross Arrow Medical Group, Tina and the staff of Quail Ridge and Tucumcari Home Health and Hospice, especially Tonya and Dana, for their loving care in his last days. He will be greatly missed.
