Joseph Cowles

Obituary of Joseph Robert Cowles

Joseph was born on 5 June 1941 in Culver City California to Jessica Velma Powell and William Cary Cowles.

Joseph was a California boy who loved to body surf at the local beaches. On his 16th birthday, Joseph was called to work at Disneyland, a dream come true. Joseph's mother was a switchboard operator and when Joseph was finished with his work day, he had the run of the park until his mother completed her day.

Joseph was drafted in 1967 and received an honorable discharge from the Army.

He came to New Mexico that same year due to a  respiratory illness contracted while in the Army. A high school friend was working for VISTA in Mesquite, New Mexico. He invited Joseph to stay with him and his wife until his health improved.

The clear dry air of New Mexico worked its magic. Joseph returned to his job in California, but felt the draw of New Mexico and returned to open his own graphics studio in Albuquerque, Cold Type Services.

In the next years, Joseph worked his special advertising and writing skills in various places: Honolulu, Ventura, Seattle and Desert Hot Springs, California. Joseph began an independent publishing venture, Event Horizon Press in 1990. Once again, an invitation from an old friend brought Joseph home to Albuquerque in 2013.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Barbora and his daughter, Justine Tracey and loved nieces and nephew in Arizona and California and many friends.
