In the sleepy town of Villanueva, New Mexico on 21January back in 1922, Grace Atencio was born under the star of Lady Luck shining brighter than the Vegas lights. She was the wily one out of the three brothers and six sisters born to Rita Padilla and Leonardo Lucero.
The clever and beautiful Grace, always one for a fiesta, met the love of her life Andrew Atencio at a dance in the fitting place of “Las Vegas”, New Mexico. The two lovebirds hit the jackpot of Amour and wed. They cashed in with three children Bill Atencio, Rosemarie Rodriguez and Patsy Cizan.
Grace made a life of out of cherishing people's faces, knowin' who her loved ones were, by the way they held her in their hearts.
So if you don’t mind me saying, she was always full of aces, for a taste of your ginger ale I want to tell you every fantastic thing about Grace:
- She loved fancy hats and scalding hot coffee
- Ginger snaps and melt-in-your mouth sugar cookies made her famous
- Her tortillas were legendary. When her itty-bitty rolling pin would fly off her fingers tips forming each little round saucer, it was like little bits of floured heaven
- She would walk in the Indian casinos like the Robert De Niro of the joint. Everyone knew and respected her. You would know who arrived by the Jackie Onassis sunglasses whipping off of her face as she decorated the mahogany. Her fellow players gasped in awe, as she would win hand after hand, then coolly walk away to eat at her newly comp'd dinner
- She loved to wade through the green-felt jungle of the City of Sin, pulling the slot handles and hitting every one-eyed Black Jack that would wink her way
- Known as “Phone Tree” for her gab through the fiberglass telephone lines, every juicy gossip was relayed from sun up to sun down if a tidbit was to be had
- Nana loved to hear peoples' voices, hear their stories, be there when they were sad to lift them up, congratulate them in all the accomplishments, celebrate the wins and even the losses
- Never let that sweet face fool you playing cards at the house. Watch out! You might cut your hand on her fin as the shark would circle the table asking if you anted your quarter to play. The twinkle in her eye would appear when she held that pair and she swept the pot into her welcome arms
- You knew the streets were always safe, as Grace never got behind a wheel in all her 100 years
- She never passed up a sweet treat; however, not one was as sweet as she was
Grace always knew when to hold em’ and she folded them on 21 April 2022 after taking 100 roulette circles around the sun. They always say the Gambler broke even, but I like to think she hit that Royal Flush with an Ace of Hearts.
At the great casino in the sky, awaiting behind those shiny doors is a sign "Welcome Grace”.
She was preceded in death by her Husband, Andrew Atencio; Daughters, Rosemarie Rodriguez and Patsy Cizan; Grand Son-in-law, Gilbert Cordova; and Great, Great Grandson, Malachi Leyva.
She is survived by her Son, Bill Atencio (Lupe); Grandchildren, Carlos Rodriguez (Nitza), Jacqueline "Jackie" Rodriguez, Christina Engel (Jason); Monique Kelso (Donald), Retta Atencio; Elizabeth Cordova, Pamela Cizan, Heidi Scheppers (Scott), Patricia “Trish” Cizan;
Great Grandchildren, Galeano Rodriguez, Miguel Rodriguez, Rico Leyva, Leticia Leyva, Samantha Verdeja (Alfonso), Chelsea Engel, Elise and Evan Kelso, Kyle Crespin, Brad Cordova (Esther), Madelynn Watkins (Andy), Sheridynn Scheppers (Collin);
Great Great Grandchildren, David Cordova, Lilian Watkins, Madeleine Verdeja and Alfonso Jason Verdeja
