Obituary of Dolores Maria Serna Tapia

Dolores Maria Serna Tapia, 80, was born July 6, 1941, in Albuquerque, NM, passed away on May 12, 2022.   

Preceding Dolores in death, husband, David Tapia, mother Carmen Serna Thomen, and brother Timothy Thomen. 

She is survived by her children, Allen Serna and wife, Shirley; Luis Tapia; and Melanie Lujan and husband, Andy; grandchildren, Jacqueline Serna and partner Stephanie Guerrero; and Arlene Serna; Kailey Tapia; Mark Anthony Tapia; Joseph, Jude, Joshua, Johnathan, and Esperanza Lujan and her fiancé, Adrian Soza; great-grandchildren, Isabella and Noah Lujan; and Aaron Soza; brothers and sisters, Frank Thomen, Jr.; Susie Scrivner and husband Dave; Raymond Thomen and wife Charlotte; Rosemary Stewart; and Elizabeth Livesay; sister-in-law, Deb Sayers-Thomen; and special “sister” Margaret Herrera. Dolores is also survived by many nephews, nieces, godchildren and dear friends, including Tara Warrior and lifelong friend, Pat Cotney 

Dolores was a devoted mother, sharing her joy of life with all of those she encountered, including the Red Hats. She lived an active life and enjoyed a variety of activities including dancing, games, especially Bingo, ceramics, arts and crafts, and New Mexican music. At age 72, Dolores decided to retire. She had many different occupations during her lifetime after graduating from Valley High School. She retired from APS as a Special Education Assistant at Cibola High School and also at Del Norte High School. She previously retired from Digital Equipment Corp. In her early working life, she was employed as a waitress, Presbyterian Hospital worker, skilled nursing facility assistant, and employed at Gulton Industries, and Singer Corporation in the manufacturing of electronic components.  

Dolores family is thankful to the administration and staff at the Rehab Center of Albuquerque for all they did to ensure she had a long and happy life. A special thank you to all the devoted staff and especially to her friend, nurse Dee, who went above and beyond expectations to care for Dolores in her final hours and ensured her family was cared for as well.  

Dolores was a devout Catholic and attended Shrine of the Little Flower, St. Therese of the Infant Jesus Parish. A viewing will be held on June 2, 2022, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Riverside Chapel, 225 San Mateo Blvd, NE. A rosary will be held prior to the Mass on June 4, 2022, at 8:30 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, 562 Atrisco Dr. SW. Albuquerque, NM. Mass at 9:00 AM. Interment to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
