It was a shock today to learn of the death of Mary Woods. She and I were classmates at Catholic University in DC back in the 70s. We were very close during those youthful years, and in the years following our graduation. We attended many, many plays together - performed in a number of them together, too - including CHEKHOV IN YALTA in Washington Stage Guild's first season, where she played Olga Knipper. We just generally hung out together a LOT. Oh, we watched so many films at the old Circle Theatre on Penn. Ave. in DC. That midnight screening of MIDNIGHT COWBOY...
When we were first out of college, I lived with my dad in District Heights, MD and she with her parents in Arlington, VA. I was substitute teaching and she was, if I recall, working at Macy's to make ends meet and save up for our own apartments...We'd meet in DC to go to shows and movies and eat and drink - closing bars while we nursed a Jameson's and discussed the meaning of Life. (I used to joke that Mary was the only person I knew who talked more than I did!) Once we each had our own apartments, we'd rendezvous in her place or mine for more earnest philosophizing...
Mary was a character! Beautiful and smart and passionate. And such a talented actor and narrator. (We worked together for a time at the National Library Service for the Blind.)
When she moved West, we stayed in touch and I visited her in Salida, Colorado back in '92. When my husband and I married, Mary came east for our wedding in '95 and when we took our honeymoon trip out West, we stayed a couple of nights with Mary and she showed us around, so proud of her adopted home.
As happens as we age, we sort of lost touch over the decades, but kept up a bit on Facebook. I'll always regret that I didn't keep in better touch.
I will miss you Mary. May you Rest in Peace.

I so fondly remember Mary from college. She lived on the same floor as my best friend which I think was in Spellman dorm. She was bright, fast, funny, insightful and so pretty. So sorry to read about her passing.

So very sorry to hear of Mary's departure from this life. I have such fond memories of our college days and was so happy to reconnect, however remotely, via Facebook with "Woodsy." I wish only happy memories also to those who were close to her.

Dear Mary, I will miss our long talks on the phone. I always made sure I had at least an hour to spend with you. You were always a great talker. I will miss your voice, but I know I can hear it again by listening to one of the many books you narrated. We had great adventures travelling down to Taos from Salida to shop and eat green Chile. You could always gauge the spicy heat of the Chile, if Mary hiccupped it was hot! So many wonderful memories fill my heart. I will miss you Mary.

I remember Mary for her wonderful sense of humor and above all, her kindness. When I tried to think of a poem for her, I thought of James Wright's The Blessing
Just off the highway to Rochester, Minnesota
Twilight bounds softly forth on the grass.
And the eyes of those two Indian ponies
Darken with kindness.
They have come gladly out of the willows
To welcome my friend and me.
We step over the barbed wire into the pasture
Where they have been grazing all day, alone.
They ripple tensely, they can hardly contain their happiness
That we have come.
They bow shyly as wet swans. They love each other.
There is no loneliness like theirs.
At home once more,
They begin munching the young tufts of spring in the
darkness.
I would like to hold the slenderer one in my arms,
For she has walked over to me
And nuzzled my left hand.
She is black and white,
Her mane falls wild on her forehead,
And the light breeze moves me to caress her long ear
That is delicate as the skin over a girl's wrist.
Suddenly I realize
That if I stepped out of my body I would break
into blossom.
Mary, you have been a tremendous blessing in my life. May blessings follow you and your loved ones everywhere you go.
