Obituary of Arthur Orlando Kavanaugh

Arthur O. Kavanaugh passed away on March 1, 2023 at the age of 90 after an extended illness. He was born and raised in Las Vegas, NM yet, was a longtime resident of Albuquerque’s South Valley.

He was preceded in death by his son, Leonard Kavanaugh, his parents, Nicolas and Henrietta Delgado Kavanaugh. His brothers; Louis, Nick, Joe, Henry, Ernest, and Hector. His sisters; Dora Ortiz, Josie Garcia, Margie Sena, Anna Marie Kavanaugh, and Tita Lopez.

Dad is survived by his children, Arthur (RC), Ernest (Rose), Audrey (Justin), Sherry (Mike), Shirley (David), and Billy, along with 15 grandkids, and 14 great-grandkids. He also had numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. Over his lifetime he was also blessed with many dear friends too!

Dad served his country both in Korea and Japan. His rank was a Corporal as a Radar Operator. He represented his Platoon in the Olympic Boxing tryouts, and was also in charge of the Physical Activities Program. He had a love affair with boxing before and after he joined the military, and loved to write poetry. Some were even published!

As an Old Time Cowboy, Dad talked about his times working at his grandparent’s ranch in Trementina and the Bell Ranch, both in New Mexico, and several ranches in Texas. His passion was riding his registered Quarter/Palomino breed horses; Chief and Beta Dial. He and his friends; Robert S., Robert G., Fred, Lewis, and Lee would enjoy the trail rides on horseback from Santa Fe to Albuquerque and also from Belen to Albuquerque.

Dad was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas, then at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Albuquerque. He was a proud member of the following organizations in both Las Vegas and Albuquerque; the Painters and Allied Trades District Council 36, the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Posse, the American Quarter Horse Association, the Palomino Horse Breeders Association, and the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign War.

We sincerely send our heartfelt gratitude to the following for their amazing service, care, and comfort given to our Dad. Compassus Hospice Staff; Genevieve, Miranda, Kara, William, Anne, and Loa. Simplicity Health Care Staff; Kandy and Alyssa.

The church services will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Albuquerque. Address at 1400 Arenal Rd SW. Rosary will be said at 8:30 a.m. followed by Mass at 9 a.m. The burial will take place at 1:30 p.m. in Santa Fe at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
