Obituary of Virginia M. Vigil

Virginia M. Vigil, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother passed on to the Lord on Saturday, March 18th, 2023.  With her were her daughters, Annie and Lillian and daughter-in-law, Helen.  She had been in residence at Genesis Ladera Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for 6 years.

 

Virginia, 2 days short of her 96th birthday, was born on March 20, 1927, in Van Houhton, NM, a mining town in northern New Mexico. Her parents were Sam Miera and Rafelita Chavez Vargas. At a young age, the family moved to Raton, NM.  There, she met and married Joe Vigil.  They met when Joe was still in the military and they married just after WWII’s end, August 5, 1946.  They raised 4 children, daughters, Lillian and Annie; and brothers Johny and Joe, Jr. 

 

In 1965, the family moved to Albuquerque where Joe had found work with the public schools— for 30 years. He also worked evenings at St Joseph’s Hospital.  Virginia worked as a waitress and later as a personal assistant to the Salazar family.

 

Virginia enjoyed gardening and was especially enthusiastic about making ceramics and pottery.

She was very involved with the Los Volcanes Senior Center, so much so, that she was an assistant meal and activities coordinator.

 

Virginia was a strong willed and courageous person, losing her father at age 18, and her dear mother in 1993.  She lost her younger son, Joe Jr, in 2005, her husband, Joe, in 2014 and her eldest son, Johnny in 2020.  

 

She is survived by her daughters, Lillian Sena and Annie Vigil-Baca, daughters-in-law, Helen Vigil and Corine Vigil; 8 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.

 

She was a member of San Martin Catholic Church.  Her Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 5th at 11am at Prince of Peace Catholic Church,12500 Carmel   Ave NE. The Rosary will precede the funeral Mass. Cremation has already taken place and she will join husband Joe in his crypt at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
