Scarlett Wright

Obituary of Scarlett Dean Wright

Scarlett Dean Wright passed from life into Life at the age of 81 on August 28, 2023, in Albuquerque, NM.

Scarlett was born July 5, 1942, in Eubank, Kentucky the daughter of the late Mary Kathryn (Farms) Bohn and Curtis Mullins. Her youth was spent in many places including Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania, summers at the farm in Kentucky, and eventually as an “Air Force brat” moving to France, England, and then New Mexico after she graduated from Bushy Park High School in London in 1960.  She stayed on the move when she served in the United States Air Force from 1962 to 1966 with stations in Texas, California, and South Ruislip AFB back in England. Upon returning to Albuquerque she met Donald Louis Wright at the Wesley Group of Christ United Methodist Church where they married on August 3, 1968.

Though she remained anchored in Albuquerque, she remained “on the move” as a young mother becoming involved with, and a resource to,  parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She volunteered and served with a variety of organizations including Albuquerque Special Preschool (now Alta Mira), a committee member on NM State Disabilities, Developmental: Planning & Advisory Council, the PTA at MacArthur Elementary School with the first side-by-side kindergarten in NM, Special Olympics, and a Cub Scout Den Mother.

Scarlett’s life was grounded by family and friends and many have felt welcomed, heard, served, and well-loved by her over the years. She cherished her family both near and far, from her children and grandchildren to her siblings and all her nieces and nephews and their families. She was always up for receiving more news and pictures, or better yet a visit where she could extend a hospitality that could be described as spoiling.

She was quick to make and nurture friendships from the many schools she attended all over the world, fellow service members, English coworkers, neighbors, stamping and card-making groups, and church. Her love of others was often expressed through her hospitality, acts of service, and her creative endeavors over the years that included ceramics, cake decorating, candy making, photography, and hand-made cards.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Donald (Don) Wright; son, Christopher (Chris) of Albuquerque, NM; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey (Jeff) and Brenda; grandchildren, Micah and Elsa Wright of Lakewood, Colorado; two brothers and sister-in-laws; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

A memorial service and reception celebrating her life will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Central United Methodist Church, 201 University Blvd NE, Albuquerque NM 87106. Inurnment will be at 9:30 AM on Monday, October 23, 2023, at Santa Fe National Cemetery, 501 North Guadalupe Street, Santa Fe, NM 87501
