Lewis Batsell

Obituary of Lewis Batsell

A proud United States Marine, Lewis Batsell (Lou) died peacefully in his sleep at home with his wife of 54 years by his side.

Lou lived a good life. He was an accomplished private and commercial pilot. Searching for Civil War artifacts with metal detectors, he and Kale camped and trekked along the Rio Grande in Central NM. Riding his Harley became an interest before his health declined. Lou assisted Kale with avian rehabilitation for over 20 years. Pigeons and doves were his friends. Upon retirement he devoted his time feeding the critters: birds, lizards, and chipmunks. Horseback riding at Ft Stanton on his horses Maggie and Bull served up many adventures.

A natural storyteller, Lou could take an everyday event and find humor in it to the delight of family and friends.

He is survived by wife Kale; children Sheila Kim Smith (Martin), Sherry Batsell (partner Bob) and Joseph Batsell as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren. To neighbors and friends of San Antonio a special thank you for making his last 17 years on this earth a happy time.

Per his wishes there will be no formal memorial service and his ashes will be scattered near his beloved Black Mesa and Ft Craig.
