The matriarch of a large, boisterous family, Maria Estela Tarango passed peacefully away on November 18, 2023 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her 96 years were dedicated to love, to being a devoted wife and the most nurturing “Mom’s mom” to her four daughters and some of their close friends, her many nieces and nephews and grandchildren. For decades, her home in El Paso, Texas, was a deeply loving sanctuary for her nuclear family, including caring for her mother for the last 19 years of her life. It was also the hub for all kinds of celebrations of life filled with great food, laughter and tears. Maria was a great dancer, an amazing seamstress, a fun-loving traveler and a cagey player of canasta. She sang in the Sweet Adelines for years, and kept singing “Gracias a La Vida” till the very end. And it is the sweet refrains of “Las Mananitas” she sang to so many in celebration of their birthdays/cumpleanos that fills our hearts eternally.
Maria’s legacy of generosity and care will be missed. She is succeeded by her four daughters, Norma Tarango, Bebe Schooley, Patty Gomez and Elaine Tarango; her two sisters, Martha Flores and Bertha Delgado; her six grandchildren, Michael Manning, Royal Casey, Thomas Schooley, Danice, Kris and Jessica Gomez; and six great grandchildren, Avery Salin Manning, Hayley, Mia and Jameson Casey, and Jayden and Asher Gomez. She was a wonderful aunt to the Tarango and Delgado side of her family. Her remaining cousins in the United States and Mexico hold her forever dear.
After cremation, her final resting place will be determined in the future. Please send contributions to the charity of your choice in her name. She would love and appreciate the continuity of life this way.
