Burial is scheduled for Monday at 12:00 noon in the old part of the Carlsbad Cemetery in Carlsbad, NM. Norman was born on February 27, 1947 in Purdy, Missouri to John Buford and Lena Louise (Gleaton) Smith. The family moved to Carlsbad, NM when Norman was a small boy. He went to Carlsbad schools and graduated with the Carlsbad Senior High School class of 1966. Norman made many lifelong friends in Carlsbad, and was known for being a good guy, loyal friend, and if provoked, not one to back down from a fight, no matter how big his opponent was. His lifelong passion was fixing up and working on cars. There was never a car that he couldn't fix and make look like new. Whenever he got a different car, the first step was going to Forrest Tire to put big tires and chrome wheels on it. To this day many of his friends remember Norman and his cars. Norman served in the Army National Guard, and in 1970, married Sandra McIntyre. They had one daughter, Amy. He and his young family moved to Albuquerque, NM when he was in his early twenties where he was an ironworker and member of the Albuquerque Ironworkers Local Union 495. He made his home in Albuquerque until his death. Norman was a loving son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend. His family was important to him, he was very close to his daughter Amy, his parents and siblings, and, he was crazy about his two young grandsons. Norman was unique, he made us all laugh, lived his life on his terms, was very good hearted, and will be deeply missed, and always loved by many. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, a nephew, Terry Dale Baker, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, and two of his lifelong friends who were like brothers to him, Jerry Owen and Tommy Miksch. Survivors are his daughter Amy (Patrick) Maloy of Albuquerque, NM, grandchildren: Wyatt and Colton Maloy; brother: John L. (Reba) Smith of Rosewood, TX; sisters, Bonnie (Ed) Hess of Carlsbad, NM, and Camille (Dalton) Trombley of Flora Vista, NM, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Stafford, Mark Miksch, Byron Sauer, Vernon Shoemake, Scott Stolenberg, Karl Edelhoff, Doyle Smith and Jimmy Risher. Honorary pallbearers are Basil Owen of Conyers GA, and Wilburn Owen of Dallas, TX.
