Obituary of Mary Muriel Sweeney

Sweeney, Mary Muriel. Muriel passed away peacefully at home on Monday, August 5, 2013 after a determined battle with cancer. Muriel was an avid bridge player and loved to travel, including living in Verona Italy for 2 years. She was a committed mother and grandmother and enjoyed spending time with family. Muriel was known for her sharp sense of humor and her love of family and friends. She was a member of the Our Lady of the Annunciation Parish. Muriel was born August 16, 1932 in Lowell, MA, daughter of Edward and Muriel Sweeney. She grew up in and around Lowell with her older brother Edward, and spent many fond summers at Cobbetts pond. She began school during the great depression at Middlesex Village School at 4 years old, and graduated from Notre Dame Academy at age 16. She attended college and later married Jim Stagnone in 1954. During their marriage Muriel gave birth to 4 energetic sons. Moving often in their early years, the family settled in Albuquerque in 1969 where the kids went through school and university. In the 1980s Muriel attended the University of Albuquerque where she graduated with honors in accounting. She then created her own bookkeeping company where she worked until her retirement. Muriel is survived by her 4 devoted sons Jay, Greg, Edward Ted and Dave and 5 loving grandchildren Nick, Kaiti, Natalie, Caleigh and Caiden and many dear extended family members and friends who visited often in her final months. Memorials in honor of Muriel may be made to the American Cancer Society as they continue to search for a cure. In Muriel's words the freedom and friends at Cobbetts Pond were a balm to my spirit. It is there she will forever rest. Arrangements entrusted to Riverside Funeral Home of Albuquerque, located at 225 San Mateo Blvd. NE, (505) 764-9663.
