Obituary of Manuel A. Martinez

Manuel (Butch) A. Martinez, 76, of Chama New Mexico, passed away at home on December 26, 2019, beloved husband of Candie Chavez Martinez, married 56 years. He was born in Durango Colorado on August 24, 1943, son of the late Juan Martinez and Reynalda Romero. Butch served in the United States Army at the age of 16, in Georgia and Germany. He attended Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico, where he majored in math and science. He was a middle school teacher in the Chama Valley School District for 25 years before retiring. He continued his career working for Russell Sand and Gravel, as a Scale Operator for 10 years. His positive influence on young lives was his passion, along with reading and music. Planting flowers in the spring and spending time with his family gave him the most joy in life. He is survived by siblings, Felix Quintana (Ramona), Tino Quintana (Yolanda), Angie Manzanarez (Milnor), Bobby Sanchez and Raul Sanchez (Jennifer), his children, Daphne Charvet (Joel), Manuel Martinez Jr. (Lena-passed 2012), Beatriz Martinez (Jason Hill-passed 2009). He also has 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews and beloved friends. Butch was predeceased by his 2 sisters, Mary Alice and Flora, 3 brothers, Ramon, Robert, Juan and his oldest grandson Tim (34). Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday January 11, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., St. Patrick's Catholic Church. 352 Pine Ave. Chama, New Mexico. Reception to follow at St. Patrick's Parish Hall.
