Ona was simply one of the most honest, funny, outspoken and courageous people I have known....and yet kind. I was so proud to have worked with her from 1995-2001 to establish a staff union at UNM. She and I would trade off being the president of our little organising committee....and she was still working at UNM when we finally achieved recognition as a staff bargaining unit. It was always an uphill battle but Ona never wavered. We had not been in touch for years after our UNM careers had ended, but she called me a couple of years ago to talk about the successful formation of a bargaining unit for Graduate Students....that was Ona!
I'm sure she's in a good place.

In my youth, Ona was an important adult to me. A strong female with a kind and gentle soul. After over a quarter century, I have many fond memories and hold her in my heart. Many things will continue remind me of Ona: magic wands, Nambe, Kringle, Andes Candies, crusty and salty pork roast, handmade solstice celebration cards, journaling, I Ching, bien muir, Egyptian scarf, birkenstocks. May she rest in peace.

So I know we all have stories about Ona but I want to share this with you all. I was reconnected with Ona a few years ago when her son E was inquiring about repairs to his moms house. She lived only a few miles from my home so I would from time to time stop in and visit with her, we would shoot the shit about times gone by. During our visits we talked about my oldest daughter Heather. Her and her wife have been trying unsuccessfully in getting pregnant via envitro, keep in mind this procedure costs $2500 a pop and they had tried 6 times with the last time ending in a miscarriage. Ona proceeded to escape into a closet and gave me a gift. It was a statue of an African goddess of fertility. I remember her saying "maybe this will help". I immediately shipped it to Heather and told her to put it in a prominent place in their house. Within 2 weeks Heather was pregnant again and blessed me and Kath with our 3rd grandson Luca. This is truly a miracle baby, I only wish it was a girl as I would have demanded to name her Ona.

Ona and I had a lot of fun when we both worked at the Art Dept. Every Valentine's Day we distributed little bags or boxes of candy to persons we knew across the UNM Main Campus.
We also made up a rap song for the University Secretary (Anne?) when she retired. I'll look for the photo.
