John Joynes

Obituary of John Lewis Joynes

John Lewis Joynes, 84, passed away February 19, 2023 peacefully at his home after a sudden illness. John was a kind, independent, quiet, funny, loyal, responsible, gentle, hardworking, and caring man; and proved that a person with these qualities could also be strong and successful.  He was loved and admired by all who knew him well.

John was born July 9, 1938 in Denison, Texas.  He graduated from University of Texas, served in the Navy and enjoyed a long career in commercial insurance, including many years with the Dwight Tope State Agency in Albuquerque. John started his family with wife Linda (Davis) Joynes, having a daughter (Lisa) and son (Jack).  After Linda’s passing, he later married Sara (Downey) Joynes, adding two more sons to the family (Martin and Chris).  John and Sara were married for 40 years until her passing.  John had been retired for more than 20 years, and his favorite activities were spending time with his beloved grandkids, vacationing with his family, particularly in Creede, Colorado, rooting for his Dallas Cowboys football team, watercolor painting, golf, fishing, and enjoying Albuquerque.

He is survived by his children, Lisa Joynes Carrillo (Rai Carrillo), Martin Nelson Downey, Jack Lewis Joynes (Lori Joynes), and Christian Brian Downey; and his grandchildren Holden Jackson Joynes, Elise Grace Downey and Sage Elizabeth Downey (and their mother Sarah Downey), and Sofia Louise Carrillo.   The family will host a private memorial.
