Dorothy (Dot) Mitchell

Obituary of Dorothy (Dot) Elizabeth Mitchell

Dorothy (Dot) Elizabeth Mitchell, 89, died peacefully on January 13, 2024.

Born in Coronach, Saskatchewan, Canada on June 2, 1934, Dot moved to the Land of Enchantment with her husband B. Thomas (Tom) Mitchell, and her first two children, Patti, and Debbie. In Albuquerque, where she lived for the remainder of her life, she ran Mitchell’s Sewing and Vacuum with her husband and grew her family with the births of Tom and Cindy. She earned her United States citizenship in 2004.

As a naturally talented artist, Dot excelled in many mediums from painting and glasswork to jewelry making. There are few artforms Dot did not try her hand at. Dot, like her husband, was also a talented gardener who kept a backyard filled with roses, pomegranates, and tomato plants.

When she wasn’t crafting or gardening, Dot channeled her deep love of animals (and treasure hunting) as a decades-long volunteer at the Animal Humane Thrift Shop. At the thrift store, Dot could be spotted sorting through donation piles and gleefully picking out new treasures to decorate her house.

Dot was preceded in death by her husband, and siblings, Len, Al, Harold, Bob, Wally, Olive, and Eve. She is survived by her children, Patricia (Patti) Bell-Madueno and husband Rey, Debra (Debbie) Morrow, Thomas B. Mitchell and wife Donna, and daughter Cindy Mitchell-Martinez; her grandchildren, Kim Morrow and husband Hassan, and Pilar Martinez; her great grandchildren, Omar, and Laila; her siblings, Ray Knudsen and wife Shirley, and sister Frances Linquist; and numerous nieces and nephews.

May she rest in peace surrounded by memories she created with those she loved. Her life will forever resonate in our hearts.

The family wishes to offer special thanks to the caregivers and staff at Advantage Assisted Living in Rio Rancho NM for their compassion and friendship to our mother.
