Today, let us reflect on a great man to many, Ray Gonzales. A man who experienced what the lord had to offer. He later told us stories of his youth. Reflecting back he told us of places he lived and the situations he’s get himself into. Throughout his life he was graced with many ordeals and blessings; But there are things that made him shine.
My Grandpa started the sacred dance of the heart when he quit drinking. It required him to let go of the wounds that may have taken residence within him, to release the burden of grudges, and to embrace the transformative power of mercy. He showed this by continuing to trust in those who wronged him. In forgiving others, he opened himself to the healing grace of God, recognizing that our own flaws and shortcomings call for the same forgiveness we extend to those who have wronged us.
His partner in faith, Grandma Albina, was his steadfast companion on this spiritual voyage. Her nightly rosary was a testament to her unwavering devotion, her reverence for the divine woven into every aspect of her being. Together, they found sanctity in the ordinary, infusing each moment with prayer and gratitude, offering their lives as a sacred offering to God.
Later in life he reflected, he had a humble acknowledgment of his own failings and the impact of his actions on others. 35 into their marriage It was his love for His Wife that got him to stop drinking. When we hold ourselves accountable, we recognize the need for growth and transformation, seeking reconciliation and making amends where necessary. His love for Grandma and his family showed that aligned himself with the values of love and justice that form the foundation of Jesus’ teachings.
My beloved friends, as we endeavor to embody these virtues in our lives, let us always cherish the understanding that we are not solitary travelers on this path. My grandfather, in his journey, forged numerous friendships. Through the boundless grace of God and the compassionate support we receive, we find the strength to extend forgiveness, to live with piety, and to hold ourselves accountable. May our actions stand as a testament to the profound impact of God's love in our world, and may we be vessels of His peace and reconciliation.

Memories shared by Ray's Volunteer care giver (Joan):
Memories of Reynaldo Gonzales
Ray was bilingual, and thoughtful and funny in both languages. Over the last year and a half, I got to know a lot
about him. We sat together and talked for 2 hours every Wednesday afternoon. As the months went by, his ability
to converse slowly diminished, but there were some things he liked to talk about again and again. He liked to joke
and crack a sly smile. Once when he was having trouble talking, I suggested he rest, and he said, "I'm not tired, I'm
just lazy!"
His philosophy was to always help other people, and to treat them fairly. He believed in hard work; that gave him
a lot of his identity. He did all sorts of physical work; he especially remembered many building projects and
working with animals in his childhood home near Escabosa. He always called himself "the baby", but insisted he
always worked more than anyone. He often forgot that he was in bed--he thought it was time to to put on his
zapatos and go out to work. He was happy to hear that he was retired, and he didn't need to make any more
money. He talked a lot about doing things for his mom when she was going through tough times. He didn't go to
school much, but with help of some neighbors, he learned to read and write.
He loved his family, and we often repeated their names so he would not forget. His mom, Juanita Crespin, his dad
Romola Gonzales, his dear brothers Fermin and Max, and his compadre Marque {I was never sure if Marque was a
friend or another name for Max.) He had a ton of stories about their adventures. He made no secret that he had
difficulties with his dad, but he loved him very much. He talked about his sisters too, but the names had already
gotten away from him.
His faith was important to him, and he said it made him a better man. He often prayed, and he remembered the
words in Spanish even after he had forgotten a lot of other vocabulary. He also occasionally treated me by singing
me a song. He loved his old days as a musician, and he loved to dance and enjoy music with his beloved wife.
He cannot have been comfortable in the last months as he got weaker, and could not move on his own. But he
seldom complained about aches and pains, and he was always saying thank you, and appreciating everyone who
helped him.
When he felt good about something, his favorite words were. "Atta boy!" And "Que Suave".
He loved his M&Ms.
His daughter Charlotte was his devoted caregiver, always patient and loving with him, bringing him his favorite
foods, and making him as comfortable as possible. He always looked forward to "Mi hija" to come and take care of
him. And he always had a smile whenever Charlotte's husband David was mentioned. David was a real favorite.
Ray also remembered his other kids and was grateful for having a good family.
