Genevieve Barrera

Obituary of Genevieve Jo Barrera

In Loving Memory of Genevieve Jo Barrera

Genny, beloved daughter, sister, aunt and niece to many, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2024 at Lovelace Hospital, surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was 39 years old.

Genny was born on March 2, 1985 in Artesia, NM to Lionel Barrera and Velma Olguin.  She grew up in Las Cruces and graduated from Onate High School in 2005.  She spent her last years living with her sister Valerie in Albuquerque, where she attended day-hab daily with her caretaker Kim Mora.

Genny, a cherished soul who embraced life with an infectious joy, and beautiful smile will leave a profound void in the hearts of all who knew her. Her radiant spirit illuminated the lives of everyone she encountered.

Genny found joy and delight in the enchanting worlds of "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Nightmare Before Christmas," where imagination and whimsy transported her to realms of wonder. Her love for these tales reflected her own magical outlook on life, where every moment was an opportunity for adventure and joy.  Genny also found thrill in the game of chance, her laughter ringing out amidst the clinking of coins at the penny slot machines. She embraced each wager with gusto, relishing the thrill of the gamble. Yet, beyond her love for the whimsical and the thrill of the game, Genny's most enduring legacy lies in the boundless love she shared with those around her. Her heart knew no bounds, and her compassion touched the lives of all who crossed her path. Her capacity for love was as vast as the sky.

Genny's departure leaves a void in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her. Though she may no longer walk among us, her spirit lives on in the memories she created and the love she bestowed upon the world.

Genevieve is survived by her mother Velma Olguin, her father Lionel Barrera, sister Valerie Corse, nieces Annelise and Brooklyn Corse and nephew Cruz Corse.  Also, aunts and uncles and countless cousins. She is preceded in death by her brother Roman Gabriel Barrera, her grandparents Eliseo and Helen Olguin, and Ramona Barrera.

A Memorial Service to honor and celebrate Genny's life will be held on April 19, 2024 at Riverside Funeral Home, 225 San Mateo Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM from 2pm-4pm. All who knew her are welcome to attend and pay their respects.

John 16:22: “So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.”
